A beautiful September sky and a flock of warbirds were present for the sixth annual Waukegan Air Show. The one-day, free airshow featured performances by The Hoppers L-39 team, the Aerostars, the Trojan Horsemen, and Dave Dacy & Tony Kazian. Warbird flybys included a F4U Corsair, T-33 Shooting Stars, P-51 Mustangs, Waukegan’s own Warbird Heritage Foundation with their F-86 Sabre and T-2 Buckeye, and a rare Grumman J24-F Duck.
One of the highlights of the show was the North American Aviation heritage flight, including an F-86, T-2, T-28 and P-51 in diamond formation. The raw power and speed at this airshow was actually closer to the ground than most shows. Paul Stender ripped down the runway in his jet powered Dodge Ram. While the military presence at the show was light, the helicopter community was well represented with a Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin demo and an Army Reserve CH-47 Chinook static display.
