Quad City Airshow, Davenport, IA June 1-3, 2007

Story and photography by Michael J. Gallagher

The Quad City Airshow opened the month of June with a bang. The Friday evening show dodged rain and actually some very severe weather that spawned tornados in the vicinity. The Virtual Army Experience which is housed in an inflatable structure suffered damage in the storm and was not accessible for the rest of the show. Headlining the show was the United States Air Force Thunderbirds. The Quad City show consistently features some of the finest performers on the airshow circuit. Consistent quality is why they have been around for so long and was able to celebrate their 20th anniversary this year. Among the top flight acts were Jim LeRoy, Jurgis Kairys and Shockwave who each performed individually and together as the mind-bending X-Team performance of CODENAME:MARYSLAMB.

One thing that was noticeably different this year was a very small collection of military static display aircraft. I hope that this was just an unfortunate alignment and not a sign of things to come. The airshow also featured plenty of warbirds, military demo teams, skydivers and activity on the ground.
