The Davis-Monthan AFB Airshow was held March 17
and 18, headlined by the US Navy demonstration team, the Blue Angels. The show
featured a strong and varied static display, featuring over thirty-five
aircraft, ranging from a DeHavilland biplane in US mail markings, an F-106
pulled from AMARC, to a pair of F-117 Nighthawks.
Also featured was the ever-popular USAF / ACC Heritage Flight which showcased a
QF-4E Phantom II from Holloman AFB, flying alongside the well-known
Commemorative Air Force P-51 Mustang, "Gunfighter," flown by Reg Urschler, an
F-16 from Hill AFB and a locally-based A-10 Warthog.
With flying scheduled from 11am until 4pm, the show opened with the Golden
Knights jumping with the American and POW flags and Ed Hamill circling overhead.
Soon after that was a pair of four-ship formations, one featuring A-10s from DM,
the other provided by the 162nd FW of the ANG, out of Tucson Int'l airport, with
some of their F-16s.
Other flying events included a C-130 / HH-60 Pave hawk "CSAR" demo, with a
simulated refuel of the Pavehawks, and several A-10s flying cover as "Sandys."
The A-10 West team demo and F-117 demo wowed the on-and-off base crowds - the
locals fill up the off-base viewpoints for this show very quickly.
There were flybys from a Tuskegee Airmen T-6, "Double-Vee", and aerobatics were
provided by Ed Hamill, Tim Weber, Greg Poe, and Kirby Chambliss. A C-130 in low
vis gray, with USMC markings, flew on Sunday's show, apparently filling in for
the Blue Angels' Fat Albert Herc.
