The week turned out to be a challenge for many of the pilots. Arch had a pylon hit on Friday that did some minor damage to his plane. Japan’s Yoshi Maroya had to withdraw after his canopy came unlatched damaging the canopy and stabalizer during the first day of training at the airport.
On Saturday Matt Hall’s MXS-R suffered a high G-stall causing the plane’s right wing to hit the water. Matt quickly recovered the plane and was able to return safely to the airport. Damages to the aircraft included the wheel spat, aileron and right rear wing with the fuselage and landing gear to be inspected at the factory. The plane is now on a truck and headed to the factory in North Carolina where repairs are expected to take less than a week. Kirby Chambliss’ crew put in a strenuous effort with no less than two engine changes that required a couple all nighters in order for Kirby to fly and reach the podium.
For race day, the track was changed due to weather conditions and several aerodynamic stalls that occurred on Saturday including Matt Halls plane. The race committee recommended that Gate 13 be by-passed after the investigation of Matt Hall’s incident.
Saturday’s qualifying round was won by Nigel Lamb of Britain in his MXS-R with a time of 1:09:64 and the first time Nigel has won a qualifying point.
The next stop for the Red Bull Races is in New York City on June 19 and 20.
