The small airshow is alive and well in the rolling hills of Toughkenamon, PA. On June 12 & 13, 2010, the 39th annual New Garden Airport airshow took place. The 2010 version was newly titled the New Garden Festival of Flight Airshow. For the first time ever in the long history of this airshow, the show was expanded from a single Sunday (usually held on Fathers Day), to a full weekend with David Schultz Airshows LLC running the show.
This year’s event had something for just about everyone, along with the airshow there were pedal planes for the kids, The Ultimate Abbott and Costello Tribute show entertained everyone, an antique car show, airplane & helicopter rides, and the local EAA chapter even staged a pancake breakfast in the morning.
The airshow was started each day with a parachute jump from the Cecil County Fall Guys. Among the firsts already mentioned, there was a very special first this year as 19 year old Jason Flood from Hammonton, N.J., flew his Pitts S1 in his very first airshow weekend. Another first for New Garden was an appearance of the B-2 Stealth bomber on Saturday. There were two helicopter demonstrations this year. The first was an MD Explorer NOTAR (no tail rotor) life flight demo, followed immediately by a USCG Atlantic City HH-65C Dauphin helicopter S&R demo. There were two warbird flights in the show this year. The first flight consisted of trainers & liason aircraft, followed by the second flight that was made up of T-6/SNJ’s. Sunday, a very touching missing man formation was flown with the T-6/SNJ flight in honor of the late Charlie Witmer of David Schultz Airshows LLC. Even though this was the first year for David Schultz Airshows LLC running the New Garden airshow, Charlie was a long time visitor to this event.
Kevin Russo did double duty flying in the warbird section of the show. Along with the warbird flight, Kevin showed his expert aerobatic capabilities in his SNJ-6. Matt Chapman, who is based at New Garden, never fails to dazzle the audience with his aerobatics in his Embry-Riddle Eagle 580. New Garden had a couple of newcomers to the airshow this year, Manfred Radius in his H 101 Salto sailplane showed the audience the beautiful nature of silent flight, and John Mohr absolutely wowed the attentive crowd with his abilities in his stock 1943 PT-17 Stearman. One of the highlights of this year’s airshow was the B-17 Memphis Belle. This big beautiful WWII heavy bomber graced the skies with that beautiful sound of 4 radial engines. With these economic times of uncertainty, it is really nice to be able to say, see you at the 40th annual New Garden airshow in 2011.
