September 11th, another date that will live in infamy, also marked the return of an airshow to NAS Fallon, home of the famous TopGun school. Their twelfth airshow, and first since 2001 featured the Blue Angels as the headlining act. Other participants included the US Army Black Daggers jump team, a dissimilar formation of NSAWC aircraft performed the missing man formation, the P-38 “Glacier Girl“, a USAF Heritage Flight, highlighted by the appearance of Major “Zeke” Skalicky in the F-22 Raptor.
There were Pitts aerobatics from Bill Cornick and Spencer Suderman, a flyby from a Travis AFB C-17 Globemaster III, a Fallon SAR demo, Greg Colyer in his CT-33 Shooting Star, the A-10 West Demo Team with Major Paul Brown piloting the Warthog, a six-ship formation of F-5 Aggressor aircraft from VFC-13 Saints and a two ship TopGun airpower demo which included the Wall of Fire.
Prior to the show’s start, the base held a very moving tribute in memory of the victims of the terrorist attacks, as well for CDR Luther Hook III, who was the base Executive Officer until his tragic death in a plane crash last spring. And just prior to the Blue Angels taking over the field, a citizenship ceremony was held for four individuals. |
