In today’s hustle and bustle world of airshows, the small airshows at the small airports have seemed to go by the wayside in this area. This is not the case at New Garden Flying Field in Toughkenamon, Pa.. For 38 years on a Sunday in June, everything from warbirds to experimental aircraft have shown up for this annual event. Not to mention the parade of general aviation that comes in for the airshow. There is definitely an air of days gone by when you set foot on this small rustic looking field.
Airplane and helicopter rides can be purchased before and after the show, and they are always a big attraction at New Garden. You can even get a ride in a Waco biplane! Even the airshow itself leads one to think of days gone by with the number of warbirds that fly in. The main attraction this year was a rare visit by a SBD-5 Dauntless Dive Bomber. This SBD-5 is one of only 2 remaining that are flying in the world today. What a treat it was to have this piece of history come to this small event. Joining the Dauntless for the warbird flight was a number of L birds, a DHC-1 Chipmunk, a Fairchild PT-26A, and the MAAM B-25 Briefing Time.
The Academy of Model Aeronautics always bring a variety of model airplanes that are flown during their performance. The Cecil County Fall Guys parachute exhibition excited the crowd as they swooped into New Garden. Aerobatics were flown by Josh Wilson in his Yak 50, Kendall Simpson in his Pitts S-2S, Kevin Russo in his SNJ-6, and New Garden’s own Matt Chapman in his Embry-Riddle sponsored Eagle 580. Nice crowds, airplanes, and aerobatics will keep the New Garden airshow on the map for years to come. Already looking forward to 2010. |
