The second weekend in May played host to Wings over Pittsburgh 2008. Along with the show, the City is celebrating its 250th anniversary, as well as the Air Force Reserve’s 60th anniversary. The event was located at the 911th Airlift Wing which is at Pittsburgh International Airport. Weather would be an issue for most of the weekend, but the Saturday show experienced beautiful weather, with an abundance of blue sky that allowed every performer to showcase their respected high shows. Those performers included the awesome power of the F-22 Raptor, F-16 Viper, and the F-18 Super Hornet. Along with the jet demos, the best of the US military was represented by the Army’s Golden Knights and the Navy’s Leap Frogs.
Along with so much military might, the show produced many civilian performances that included Julie Clark, Sean and Eric Tucker, ANG Pilot John Klatt, Matt Chapman, and the GEICO SkyTypers. These skilled performers thrilled the huge crowd and demonstrated the precision and skill that it takes to make their aircraft dance across the sky.
Rounding out the day was Canada’s precision aerobatic team, the Snowbirds. Professionalism is demonstrated at its finest with the Snowbirds, and their aerial ballet of the sky was the highlight of the show for many. They gracefully push their CT-114 Tutors to the max, changing formation while in the vertical. This is what precision formation aerobatics is all about. In all, it was a very successful and standout show, and it had a lineup of aircraft that any air show would love to have.
