This year’s Airpower Over Hampton Roads (Apr 24 – 26, 2009) at Langley Air Force Base marked the last performance by the Air Combat Command’s F-15 West Coast Demo Team. Capt Sam “Nuke” Joplin put on quite a show before the crowd. After 26 years of airshow performances the F-15 Eagle will give way to the Lockheed F-22 Raptor.
The airshow kicked off Friday evening with flying demos of fighter aircraft and night demonstrations flown by Matt Younkin in his Twin Beech 18 configured with flood and strobe lights and Bill Leff in his T-6 Texan sporting pyrotechnics. |

Saturday’s events opened with the US Air Force Academy’s “Wings of Blue” Parachute Demonstration Team jumping from a C-17 Globemaster III. Twelve parachutists performed four separate maneuvers at altitudes ranging from 4500 to 11,000 feet. There was virtually no break in the action throughout the day. The “Wings of Blue” were immediately followed by the C-17 tactical demonstration. Next up was Kyle Franklin in his WACO and Sean Carroll in his YAK-9. Capt Joplin did an outstanding job of putting the F-15 through its paces and really wowed the crowd. John Mohr impressed everyone with his aerobatics in his Stearman PT-17. The B-2 made several passes before continuing on to another airshow. Herb Baker and his T-28 “Ditto” made several bullseyes through smoke rings created from his wingtip’s vortices. Matt Younkin did another graceful show with his Beech 18. The action continued with aerobatic demonstrations by the Navy’s F/A-18C Hornet, Bill Leff with his T-6, Jerry Kerby in the T-33 Vintage Thunderbird, the QF-4, and F-22. One of the highlights at this year’s show was Art Nalls and his Sea Harrier. Art has the only privately owned Sea Harrier on the airshow circuit. His show was outstanding and included a ‘bow’ to the crowd while hovering over the runway.
The day was capped off with another performance by the Wings of Blue followed by the USAF Thunderbirds. The Thunderbirds performed their usual outstanding show.
Sunday was another beautiful day with great barnstorming and aerobatics by all.
